Introduction
In the last decade of the nineteenth century, the British government embarked on a significant and innovative irrigation and agricultural colonisation experiment in the territory of Punjab. The target of the local administration’s attention was the large Rechna Doab, the territory between the rivers Chenab and Ravi. Within twenty years, the canal had achieved its designed goal of providing an annual irrigation of approximately 2,450,000 acres of land.

By the end of the nineteenth century, British authorities had extensive experience with canal irrigation in Punjab. In the nineteenth century, the Upper Bari Doab Canal was built, which demonstrated the potential of year-round irrigation. From One Canal To The Whole Irrigation System
The Lower Chenab Canal, despite its historical significance, is by no means a single system. Modern studies of the Lower Chenab Canal system reveal a fairly complex structure, in which the main canal is divided into east and west branches. According to a source, these branches include Upper Gugera, Lower Gugera, Burala, Mian Ali, Rakh, Jhang, and others. According to the census, the population of the Chenab colony amounted to 791,861 people, of which, according to the original census data, 443,509 were migrants or residents of another colony.
